My Why

I truly believe that preventative care is our path to a healthier life and community. My passions include health and wellness, focusing on lifestyle improvements to prevent many of the chronic illness that ail older adults such as heart disease, chronic pain, diabetes, high blood pressure, and even mental health problems.

Unfortunately, our current system tends to favor fixing ailments rather than focusing on prevention.  The insurance reimbursement model is breaking, and more physicians are leaving the field as they are experiencing burn out and lack of fulfillment in their careers.  They are being forced to see larger numbers of patients while being burdened with more administrative tasks and clicking boxes on their electronic medical record.  In addition, insurance companies have been increasing patient costs and increasing their requirements of certain metrics to qualify for reimbursement. That is why physician visits often have more of a checklist feel. Unfortunately, small physician practices that have long valued a close doctor-patient relationship are financially unviable, and are pressured to sell to larger corporations or hospital systems.

The Direct Primary Care model has been a lifesaver for me, and I believe it will be for patients as well.  Practicing medicine is more than just a job, it is a calling.  But in the insurance-based model, I was burnt out and frustrated with increasing time spent on completing tasks that did not improve patient care, and pressure to spend less time with patients.  After more than 15 years in this system, which I had grown to believe "that's just they way it is," I discovered the Direct Primary Care model and I decided I could no longer be part of the problem.  It allows for me to be the physician I know that patients deserve, offering more time to spend with parents as well as giving them access to advice and information in between appointments.   As I see my colleagues leave the field, I am saddened and disheartened for our future - everyone needs quality healthcare by a physician they trust.  I hope that more physicians and patients discover this return to the core principle of medicine:  the doctor-patient relationship.
